Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by about 10 million people mainly in Sweden and parts of Finland. Swedish is mutually intelligent with Norwegian and Danish and is a descendent of Old Norse, the language of the Germanic peoples living in Scandinavia during the Viking Era. Sweden does have some distinct regional variations of the language but uses “Standard Swedish” for grammar and vocabulary. As a Nordic language Swedish does retain some of the strong syllable sounds. However, there is a sweet quality to Swedish making it interesting to listen to the flowing stream of vowels and consonants. Baby Name Network has many Nordic languages to review, including several Swedish baby names and name meanings for you to browse through.
